My name is Nichelle Thomson and I feel privileged to have been chosen to represent Northern Ontario this year! Since being crowned about 2 weeks ago on May 12th at the Miss North Ontario Regional Canada Pageant, I have had this time to let it sink in and brainstorm what I want to do with my year of reign! But to try to sum up everything about me in a few paragraphs, for those of you who don’t know me yet, is a challenge in itself. But here goes nothing!
I am 17 years old and I am finishing up grade 11. I guess you could refer to me as a bit of ‘die hard’ because I truthfully cannot stand not giving everything I do 110%! From dance to sports, art to math, baking to hiking, my interests really do range from girly-girl to tom-boy. When it comes to school, my diverse interests really shine though! I love all the sciences, especially biology so I guess that sort of classifies me as a bit of a nerd; I really enjoy visual arts including drawing, painting and sculpting; but I also take great interest in phys. Ed. which revolves around my favourite sports basket-ball, badminton, and track and field.
Above all, dance has been my most dominant priority, next to school, for years! Already at the end of this year’s competitive dance season, I will be celebrating my 11th year! Although I enjoy virtually every dance style that I’ve tried, ballet and acro (acrobatics) are by far my favourites!
Naturally, I love gymnastics as well! From 2008 to 2011 I competed in gymnastics, where the last two of those years I won, and defended Overall Level 4 gymnast in Northern Ontario. But if only there was more time in the day! Even though I didn’t have time to compete this year, instead I helped coached my school gymnastics team and did the choreography for the beam and floor routines.
Aside from that life that is most familiar to me, my life drastically changed last summer when I heard the news of the suicide of my favourite high school teacher, Mr. Laframboise. I was always a strong believer in everything happens for a reason, but sometimes you can find yourself getting lost when trying to step back to get some perspective on the whole picture as to WHY it happened. I learned two important lessons late last year; only we have the power to make ourselves, and life entirely can be defined in just three simple words… it, goes, on. That is why I chose to do my platform in honour of my teacher. I want to spread awareness about mental health diseases, specifically depression, so that I can help people who suffer from this both directly (being victims themselves) and indirectly (dealing with a family member and/or friend that suffers from this disease).
With my title, I don’t only want to make an impact with my platform, I want to promote healthy and active living in hopes to try to reverse the statistics of childhood obesity. Being hired as a Zumba instructor last summer has already helped me to start my mission! I have always loved working with children of all ages, all different abilities and/ or developing levels. Knowing that child obesity is at an all time high, I see myself as being their positive role model so I always lead by example because I know most habits that you create when you’re young, are carried out and into adulthood. Even just contributing 45 minutes of my time per week, I help by offering children and parents a new and fun way to move and get fit without even knowing its exercise!
I would like to give thanks to all my wonderful family, friends and supporters who have shared my journey thus far and many more thanks to those in the future!
This is however, only an introductory post as to who I am and what I ‘m like. I hope you can stick around and get to know me better from the many more entries that are to come!
